The world of dog breeding is evolving, and it is essential for both puppy buyers and breeders to grasp the details of canine genetics, especially with breeds like the Doberman. Enter Diva Denissov of Dobruski Dobermans and the launching of Doberman University on Youtube, a groundbreaking Doberman education platform aimed at educating Doberman enthusiasts about the health and importance of knowing what a healthy Doberman pedigree looks like. We want to shine a light on the importance of knowing what to look for and what to avoid if you love this breed.
Understanding a pedigree and how to do basic analysis is crucial. It significantly impacts a Doberman's health, behavior, and lifespan. Let’s look at why this knowledge matters and how Diva's Doberman University can be your go-to resource.
The Importance of Pedigree Knowledge
Many breeders and potential buyers overlook the importance of the information contained in a typical Doberman pedigree. A pedigree is more than just a piece of paper; it reveals EVERYTHING in that dog’s ancestry and indicates how much longevity potential is there and all of the potential health issues and character traits.
For example, knowing your Doberman's lineage can help to avoid choosing a puppy whose lifespan potential is 2-7 yr of age or 7-14 yr of age, it has evidence of all of the possible genetic issues and the dogs who are considered high risk for developing DCM, Cancer, Bloat, or CVI, let alone character and temperament issue and all of the factors like bottlenecks in this breed that have created all the breed-related problems. A study from the American Veterinary Medical Association found that breeds with limited genetic diversity faced a 30%-60% higher risk of hereditary diseases. Buyers who understand this can make better decisions, leading to healthier, happier dogs.
Genetic Bottlenecks and Their Impact
Genetic bottlenecking is a significant concern for Dobermans. This happens when a few popular sires are overly used in breeding programs, leading to a limited gene pool. This narrow gene pool can result in inherited health problems and reduced fertility.
At Doberman University, we focus on educating about these factors like bottlenecks and popular sires known to have litany of issues and early deaths in their litters. With advancements in the groundbreaking DNA testing tools like UC Davis Veterinary Genetics labs "Doberman Diversity test" DNA genetic testing, breeders can now identify these risks. Finding Breeders who use this testing and use the database its used in, can now make much better safer breeding decisions, but few Breeders today know these tools and or use them, but we do, and we are teaching you the puppy buyer how to find these breeders like us. For instance, an examination of Doberman genetics in the last decade showed that 25%-50% of them carried genes associated with serious health issues due to bottlenecks. Understanding these risks is essential for breeding healthier dogs.
The Dangers of Popular Sire Syndrome
Popular Sire Syndrome is another major challenge especially in this breed with a base of 7 popular sires as the foundation dogs in the breed, achieving and maintaining genetic diversity is the sole focus of conservation breeders like us.
This syndrome occurs in ALL purebred dogs and regionally when a single or a few dogs become incredibly popular, leading to FAR TOO many descendants being related too closely to each other and reducing the overall genetic diversity. While these dogs may excel in events, relying too heavily on one lineage can create risks.
At Doberman University, we highlight the importance of today's Doberman gene pool needs to be diversifying breeding choices. Research shows that breeding from dogs representing a wider variety of bloodlines reduces inherited health problems. For instance, a breeder may choose a sire from three distinct bloodlines rather than one overly popular sire, as studies have shown that dogs with diverse pedigrees just live longer.
Understanding Eastern European Lines
Eastern European Doberman lines have been trending, but there are concerns regarding their health and longevity which is currently approx. 2-9 yrs of age. While these dogs may have impressive looks, they can exhibit increased number of puppies dying early as 2 yrs of age of DCM and massively increased susceptibility to certain health conditions if not bred properly. Common health issues include bloat, wobblers, Cancers and of course much higher rates of heart diseases, documented to occur in over 60% of these lineages compared to less than 40% in other bloodlines.
Educating buyers about these risks is crucial for making informed decisions. Doberman University aims to provide the necessary knowledge to navigate these challenges.
Weekly Live Sessions for Real-Time Learning
One of the most engaging features of Doberman University is our weekly live sessions on platforms like YouTube and Facebook. These sessions allow you to ask questions, share thoughts on breeding practices, and delve into pedigree evaluations.
For example, during a recent session, we discussed a case study where a breeder discovered that they had DCM deaths in the grandparents and great grandparents and great great grandparents and these dogs had died at ages from 2-7 yr of age, and so to breed their dogs which both had the same popular sires in both the sire and dam, they would have created genetic probability of 75-100% deaths in those puppies by 5 years of age.... So not pairing those two dogs significantly avoided the higher risk for genetic health issues just by learning what was in the second and third generation and fourth generations in those pedigrees. We encourage everyone, from seasoned breeders to first-time buyers, to participate. There is always something new to learn.
